Presentation of consensus guide for medicine uses in renal insufficiency

Improving the dose management in medicine for kidney failure patients, in primary and specialized healthcare, is the first aim of the “Consensus guide for medicine uses in renal insufficiency”, an innovative online tool for health professionals which will be presented on May 4 at 12h, in Ramón y Cajal room in the Historical building of the UB.

Recerca

In this event, which will be presided by the Rector Dídac Ramírez, there will be the participation of M. José Gaspar, head of Servei d’Ordenació i de Qualitat Farmacèutiques (Pharmacy Quality and Management) of the Health Department; the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Joan Esteve de Sagrera; Marian March, teacher at the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology and head of the Practical Pharmacy group in the University of Barcelona; M. Dolores del Pino and Alberto Martínez, President and ex-President of the Spanish Nephrology Association (S.E.N.); teacher M. Àngels Via, from the Practical Pharmacy group in the University of Barcelona; José Luis Llisterri, President of the Spanish Association of Primary Healthcare Doctors; Francesc Llambí, member of Col·legi de Farmacèutics of Barcelona, and professor Albert Torres, adjunct to the academic Vice-Dean’s office of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona.

Among the Pharmacy offices’ users, one out of three –polymedicated and aged over 65- patients shows some kidney failure level according to a study carried out by the group Practical Pharmacy of the University of Barcelona. In addition, the study shows that in this group of patients, one out of two of the prescribed medicines would need a dose adjustment to guarantee the medicine safety in the patient.

This consensus guide supports the idea that patients’ safety is one of the main factors in assistance quality, and it is the result of a collaboration agreement by the education and research group of Practical Pharmacy of the University of Barcelona and the Spanish Nephrology Association (S.E.N.) to promote education, research and collaboration among doctors and pharmacists when it comes to a safe use of medicine on patients.

This new tool, aimed at health professionals, has been carried out thanks to the analysis of the most given medicines in community pharmacies. To create an online website for the guide, there has been a knowledge transfer project with the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Sciences of the UB. This new platform becomes a practical tool which is useful to value the safe use of medicines, propose dosage adjustments and promote collaborative practises among health professionals.
